Sean’s Story
“I’d been in care since I was 5 years old. By the time I turned 16, all I wanted was to be independent, but the truth was I had no idea how to do it. I didn’t know how to open a bank account or write a CV…and I was living off pot noodles and jam on toast, and staying at a lot of friends houses.
I was carrying a lot of anger and hurt from my past. I’d moved around a lot growing up and found it hard to trust people. I struggled to stick with things and found social situations really hard. I was a bit embarrassed to be honest, about my upbringing, so I’d push people away before they really got to know much about me.
When I arrived at YMCA (Worcestershire), everything changed. From day one, the people there treated me with kindness and patience. Nobody forced me into anything. I learned things at my own pace, and knew there was always someone there if I needed support.
The Life Coaches helped me build my confidence and learn new skills, but more importantly they helped me learn how to trust people again. I’ve become a better listener, I’m much more confident talking to people, and I’m about to start a course in personal training, which is mad really, knowing how I was a few years ago.
I’ve still got a lot to learn, but I’m not as angry anymore, and I know where to get help if that changes in the future. For the first time in a long time, I’m excited about the future and ready to see what I can do. I do still love a pot noodle though.”
