This month, we celebrate the passion and dedication of Caroline, Deputy Nursery Manager at Squirrels Nursery, Redditch.

“The YMCA has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I first attended the play-scheme during the school holidays and loved it so much I began volunteering at 15. I was a shy teenager with a passion for working with children, and growing up in a big family, I always knew childcare was where I belonged.

Volunteering led to a Level 3 qualification, then a job at YPLAY, and eventually a full-time role at Squirrels Nursery. Over the years, I’ve grown from room leader to Deputy Manager—thanks to the belief and support of an amazing team who helped me build confidence and skills every step of the way. The YMCA has also been my rock during heart-breaking times. At 17, I lost my sister – she was just 16 – we used to volunteer at YMCA together. Then at 20 I lost my brother too. My work at YMCA gave me purpose and strength when I needed it most. At 24, I was diagnosed with Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a life-threatening condition that forced me to adapt how I worked. A year later, I lost another sibling to the same condition.

Through it all, the love, compassion, and unwavering support from Lynsey and the YMCA team never wavered.

In 2022, I experienced my greatest joy: the birth of my miracle baby. Having him in the on-site nursery made the transition back to work easier and gave me peace of mind.

The care and encouragement I’ve received at Willow Trees Community Centre is why I stay. This role has given me strength, purpose, and a true sense of belonging. For all of this—and so much more—I’ll always be grateful to the YMCA.”
